Students Stepping Up
Students at Texas A&M University-San Antonio are less likely to land paid internships and more likely to juggle classes and jobs unrelated to future careers, according to national data.

That’s why TAMUSA’s communication program is fundraising to continue paid journalism internships at community newspapers near campus.
Our inaugural partnership with The Devine News in spring 2024 has allowed intern Victoria Arredondo to gain real-world experience reporting on city government, school boards and other small-town news.

This relationship is a win-win for the newspaper and the student intern.
Victoria’s internship was funded entirely by donations from her peers:
Four student media organizations contributed $2,500 from previous fundraisers
at campus events. Now we are looking for matching donations of $2,500 to continue this internship in summer 2024 and beyond.
Now we ask you to do the same. We are seek matching donations of $2,500 to continue the internship in summer and fall 2024. And that’s just the start. We hope to continue this in future semesters and add other papers to our initiative. Please give what you can to support our students as they hone their skills at community newspapers.
